Getting on the North Carolina Do Not Call Registry
You can register by phone at 1-888-382-1222 or online at www.nocallsnc.com. You must have an active email address to complete the registration process. Your registration expires after five years at which time you must re-register to remain on the North Carolina Do Not Call Registry.
What does getting on the North Carolina Do Not Call Registry do?
Under North Carolina and federal law, telemarketers are not permitted to call your phone number after it's been on the registry for at least three months. If they do, you can file a complaint with the Attorney Generals Consumer Protection Division. Forms can be obtained online at www.nocallsnc.com, or by calling 1-877-5-NO-SCAM. You may also file an action in state court with the Federal Trade Commission at www.donotcall.gov. Furthermore, you can file a complaint with the Federal Communications Commission.

Telemarketing Laws for the home
- At the beginning of each call, the caller must clearly identify himself and the business or entity that they represent.
- The telemarketer must provide you, on request, with a telephone number or address where you can reach them.
- You may request to have your name removed from the telemarketers calling list. They must then take all steps and make every effort to have your number removed from their list.
- No telemarketer may call your home after 9pm or before 8am.
- With a few exceptions, telemarketers may not use pre-recorded messages.
- Telemarketers are required to transmit their telephone numbers, and if possible, the name of the entity they represent through your caller ID service.
- Telemarketers must connect you with a representative within two seconds after you answer the phone.
Telemarketing Laws for the business
- Telemarketers are forbidden to use autodialers in a way that will tie up two or more lines of any business that has multiple lines, and they must release your line within five seconds of hanging up.
- In the event a telemarketer sends advertisements to you over fax, they must have prior express permission or invitation and the cover sheet must clearly dispaly the time of transmission, as well as the identity and phone number of the sender. These rules apply to residential fax machines as well.
